The best free software is AVG! from grisoft. But be warned- the free AVG is not a complete replacement for a complete suite- such as Norton. The free AVG contains no real-time protection- which means you will have to run the scans yourself and it does not have as big of a database of "known virus." I am looking for a very good antivirus. I used to have the one Optimum Online offers for free "E-Trust Ez Armor" But it was very weak and could not detect many viruses at all. It didn't search for ad-ware, spyware etc.

I recently have downloaded the Comodo AntiVirus and FireWall combo. I have heard a lot about the FireWall and PC Magazine has recognized it also.

Though, I hear the A.V. is very young and still cannot detect all viruses. I need something that can protect too (not just scan like the BitDefender Freeware).

Hi, i use avg antivirus free edition and i keep it up to date every day and always stop all viruses

yesterday! I downloaded a file and scanned it right away. It told me that the file was virus free but when i decompressed it, i end up with two files. One that was ok and the other one was a trojan named Kernels88. How come avg didn't detect it when i scanned it just before? Is there another free antivirus that is more effective than avg? avg is very effective. However, when you scan a compressed file it will only scan the files that are visible. You should have opened the compressed folder and scanned again so that all the files were visable.

My PC Guru set me up with Mcafee, wich I LOVE!! I also use spybot search and destroy, and also adaware. Between the three of them they really saved my butt a week ago. They are free and very user friendly.
